The Jakarta administration has announced a plan to build health clinics at 20 traditional markets throughout the city, as part of wider efforts to improve access to health care and disease prevention.
Dien Emmawati, the head of the city health office, said on Saturday that the main function of the clinics would be to cater to residents seeking medical treatment, but added they would also play another important role.
“These clinics won’t just be about providing medical care. They will also provide guidance and information to the public about various food-related issues, including dangerous ingredients not permitted in food,” she said.
She added that the 20 markets where the program would initially be introduced would be selected based on the number of reports of sales of food items there tainted with various kinds of dangerous ingredients or additives.
These include formaldehyde, a preservative; borax, a food-texturing agent; and various prohibited dyes such as those used for textiles.
“A lot of these ingredients an cause kidney damage, and people with a severe enough case of kidney damage will require lifelong dialysis, which is expensive and can overwhelm the city’s health care system,” Dien said.
This is why, she went on, the health office was looking to prevent those problems from occurring in the first place by cracking down on contaminated food items directly at the source.
The market clinic program is also part of a Trade Ministry initiative, launched earlier this month, to certify markets nationwide as selling food that is free of any dangerous additives.
